06 Oct Secret RF vs Sylfirm X vs Morpheus8 vs Potenza, How RF Microneedling Devices Differ
Searches for radiofrequency (RF) microneedling in Singapore are often searches for a device name. Sylfirm X, Morpheus8 and Potenza are the most asked about, and Secret RF is the device used at The Skin Longevity Clinic. All four deliver radiofrequency through microneedles, and the published evidence for the category is shared more than it is device-specific1. The differences that matter are needle insulation, depth range, energy mode and the indications for which each has been studied.

What all RF microneedling devices have in common
Each uses an array of fine needles that enter the skin to a set depth and release bipolar, or in some modes monopolar, radiofrequency at the tip. Heat is concentrated in the dermis, the epidermis is spared when insulated needles are used, and collagen remodelling follows over 4 to 12 weeks1,2. The operator’s choice of depth, energy, pulse duration and number of passes decides the result more than the brand does.

Secret RF
Secret RF (Cutera) uses different needle depths for different indications, so the depth is set for the concern being treated. The Skin Longevity Clinic uses Secret RF for acne scars, enlarged pores, texture and selected melasma cases, as described under RF microneedling in Singapore.
Sylfirm X
Sylfirm X (Viol) adds a pulsed-wave mode with a very short pulse duration to the usual continuous-wave mode. Pulsed-type microneedling RF has been studied for refractory melasma and Riehl melanosis. In 44 Korean patients, five sessions reduced melanin index, erythema and transepidermal water loss, and histology showed fewer pigment-laden cells and less vascular proliferation3. These findings are the basis for its reputation in pigmentation and redness. For acne scars it acts as a standard continuous-wave device.
Morpheus8
Morpheus8 (InMode) is known for deeper penetration, with facial tips reaching up to 4 mm and deeper tips for the body, and for treating the subdermal fat layer for laxity and contouring as well as the dermis for scars4. Deeper, higher-energy treatment carries a higher risk of the fat loss and contour change described in the 2025 safety communication from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) when devices are used outside cleared parameters, so depth selection and operator training matter more with deep-tip devices5.
Potenza
Potenza (Cynosure) offers monopolar and bipolar modes, single-needle and multi-needle tips and a “tiger tip” with staggered needle depths that heats several layers in one pass. Real-world data from a Korean dermatology centre reported clinical improvement in 94 percent of 50 acne patients over a median of three sessions, with mild adverse events in 10 percent6. A 2025 split-face randomised trial used Potenza for atrophic acne scars and recorded significant improvement over four sessions7.

RF microneedling device comparison table
| Secret RF | Sylfirm X | Morpheus8 | Potenza | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Needle insulation | Set for the indication | Insulated | Insulated (coated) | Insulated or non-insulated |
| Depth range (face) | Different needle depth for different indications | About 0.3 to 4 mm | About 0.5 to 4 mm (deeper body tips) | About 0.5 to 4 mm |
| Energy mode | Bipolar, continuous | Bipolar, pulsed and continuous | Bipolar, continuous | Monopolar and bipolar |
| Studied strengths | Acne scars, pores, texture (category evidence)1,2 | Melasma, redness3 | Laxity, subdermal remodelling4 | Acne, acne scars6,7 |
| Pigmentation safety | Epidermis-sparing | Epidermis-sparing | Epidermis-sparing at dermal depth | Epidermis-sparing |
Depth figures are manufacturer specifications and vary by tip, so they are not interchangeable across devices.

Does the device matter more than the doctor?
For acne scars, the systematic reviews pool results across devices and find consistent improvement regardless of brand1,2. What varies between clinics is the scar diagnosis, the depth matched to the scar type, the energy matched to the skin type, sterile technique and whether subcision or TCA CROSS (chemical reconstruction of skin scars with trichloroacetic acid) is performed first. The clinic’s position is that a doctor-performed treatment on a cleared device, at the correct depth, matters more than the brand of the handpiece.

Which RF microneedling device is best for melasma?
Pulsed-mode devices have the most melasma-specific data3. Secret RF is used at the clinic for melasma at low energy as an adjunct, within a plan built on sun protection and topical treatment, as explained under RF microneedling for melasma.
Dr Rachel Ho discusses microneedling and RF microneedling for acne scars, pores and skin texture in her doctor’s guide to RF microneedling.
RF microneedling device FAQs
Is Sylfirm X better than Morpheus8?
The two devices are built for different purposes, with Sylfirm X holding the pigmentation and redness data and Morpheus8 offering the depth for laxity. Neither is better for acne scars on current evidence.
Is Secret RF the same as Sylfirm X?
Secret RF and Sylfirm X are different devices, although both deliver RF microneedling. Sylfirm X adds a pulsed mode, whereas Secret RF uses different needle depths for different indications.
Which RF microneedling device is safest for Asian skin?
Any insulated-needle device at appropriate settings is suitable, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation rates are low across the category1.
Does Morpheus8 cause fat loss?
Fat loss has been reported with deep, high-energy RF microneedling used outside cleared parameters, and the FDA issued a safety communication in 20255.
Which device does The Skin Longevity Clinic use?
The clinic uses Secret RF, operated by Dr Rachel Ho.
